Since 18 October 2026, at least five Mexican outlets have said the three lines next to some WhatsApp chats mark a poll, but WhatsApp has not confirmed it. The only lines its official help documents sit inside the poll composer, where they reorder the options. To find polls, use the Polls filter in the Chats search bar.
The three lines some people have seen next to their WhatsApp chats since 18 October 2026 are being read as a sign of a poll in that conversation, but WhatsApp has not announced it and its Help Center does not explain it. What is documented is a different set of lines: the ones inside the poll composer, next to each option. This article separates what is confirmed from what is not, shows how to create and find polls, and explains what the hide-voters setting really protects.
Key takeaways
- The "three lines = poll" reading started in Mexican media on 18 October 2026 and cites no WhatsApp source and no version number.
- The official help only documents lines inside the poll editor: three lines on iPhone and four on Android, used to drag and reorder the options.
- A poll takes a question of up to 255 characters and up to 12 options of 100 characters each.
- Since 4 August 2026 you can set an end time, hide voter names and edit the question for 15 minutes.
- Hiding voters hides the names from the whole group, including the poll creator.
- To find polls, use the Polls filter in the search bar of the Chats tab.
What is known about the three lines next to chats
The explanation going around is that the icon marks conversations with a pending poll, and for now that is all it is: an unconfirmed explanation.
The first to publish it was El Universal[1], on 18 October 2026 at 9:00. Other Mexican outlets repeated it the same day. On 20 October the Italian engineer Pasquale Pillitteri covered it on his blog, also as unconfirmed. None of those articles links a WhatsApp announcement, a changelog or an app version.
I checked the primary source on 20 October 2026. The Help Center article How to use polls[2] has one tab per platform (Android, iOS, Web, Mac and Windows) and none of them mentions an indicator in the chat list. Neither does the WhatsApp blog post of 4 August 2026[3], the latest official announcement about polls.
Two readings fit what people are seeing. The first is a new indicator that WhatsApp is switching on in stages and has not announced yet.
The second is a message-type icon. The chat list already marks a photo with a camera and a voice note with a microphone. A poll as the last message could carry its own icon. Either way the icon is not a button: it does not open the poll or let you vote from the list.
The lines WhatsApp does document
The only lines in the official help sit on the poll creation screen, to the right of each option. The Help Center describes the icon in the alt text of its own images, and the shape depends on the system:
| Platform | Name in the help | Shape | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Drag Item | Three parallel horizontal lines | Tap and hold, then drag to reorder |
| Android | Reorder | Four parallel horizontal gray lines | Tap and hold, then drag to reorder |
| Mac and Web | Unnamed | Drag handle next to the option | Click and drag to reorder |
If someone shows you a screenshot of "the three lines" inside a poll, this is it. Tap and hold the icon and slide the option up or down to change its position before you send the poll.
How to create a WhatsApp poll step by step
A poll is created from the chat’s attachment menu, in six steps. These are the phone ones, according to the official help:
- Open the chat and tap the paperclip on Android or the + on iPhone.
- Choose Poll.
- Pick the settings: Allow multiple answers (on by default), Hide voter names and Set an end time.
- Type the question, 255 characters at most.
- Add up to 12 options of 100 characters each and reorder them with the lines.
- Send the poll.
The step 3 settings cannot be changed after sending: the help says that if you want different ones, you have to delete the poll and create a new one. Only the question text is editable, and only for the 15 minutes after you create it. The options cannot be edited.
What changed in polls on 4 August 2026
WhatsApp announced three group poll improvements on 4 August 2026, alongside the @all mention. They are:
- End time: voting locks at the time you choose.
- Hide voter names: the results show counts, not who voted for what.
- Question editing: for 15 minutes, to fix a typo or clarify.
The blog gives the reason for hiding names: it is there so "the whole group is more comfortable sharing their preferences". The same post limits @all to admins in groups with more than 32 people.
WABetaInfo[4] had spotted these settings in development on 13 February 2026, in Android beta 2.26.6.7, almost six months before the announcement. Polls themselves arrived much earlier, on 3 November 2022[5], together with Communities.
What hidden voting really hides
Hiding voters hides the names from the whole group, including whoever created the poll. Part of the August coverage says the opposite, that the creator still sees who voted for what, but the official help is explicit: "Everyone, including you, will see vote counts but not names."
The same help passage carries a detail that matters: the setting "only controls what’s displayed in the poll results screen". WhatsApp does not document how that vote is protected internally, so treat it as a display option and not as a secret ballot with guarantees. It is plenty for choosing a pizza. For a vote with consequences, such as a residents’ association or a club, use a tool built for that.
Channels follow a different rule. According to the channel polls help page[6], channel polls are public. The admin can see each responder’s name, voting time and photo, depending on that person’s privacy settings.
How to find the polls in your chats
The official help documents a way to find polls that works today, whether or not you have the new icon. On Android and iPhone:
- Open the Chats tab.
- Tap the search bar. On iPhone you may need to swipe down to see it.
- Scroll the filters to Polls and tap it.
The result lists the polls from all your conversations. To see the details of an active one, open it in its chat and tap View votes. It shows how many members voted and, if the poll does not hide names, who picked each option.
If you do not see the lines or the new settings
Not seeing the icon does not mean anything is wrong with your account. It does not mean you have been blocked, that someone broke into your account, or that your privacy settings changed. If an intrusion worries you, check the real signs I cover in the guide to protection against digital threats.
If what you are missing are the new poll settings, these are the causes I found in the documentation:
- Old version: update WhatsApp from Google Play or the App Store. The help lists this as the first step for any poll problem.
- Staged rollout: WABetaInfo describes features reaching more accounts "over the coming weeks", so two phones on the same version can look different.
- Desktop: on 20 October 2026 the Windows and Web tabs of the help only mention Allow multiple answers. Hide voters and the end time appear on Android, iPhone and Mac.
- Poll already sent: settings cannot change after creation; delete the poll and create it again.
How WhatsApp polls compare with Telegram, Signal and Nextcloud Talk
WhatsApp sits in the middle: more options than Signal, less default anonymity than Telegram. The table sums up what each project documents:
| App | Max options | Anonymous votes | Automatic close |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp (groups) | 12 | Optional, hidden from the creator too | Yes, end time |
| WhatsApp (channels) | 12 | No, the admin sees names | Not documented |
| Telegram | 12 in the Bot API | Yes, by default | Yes, open_period or close_date |
| Signal | 10 | No | No, the creator ends it by hand |
| Nextcloud Talk | Not documented | Optional | Not documented, closed by hand |
The Telegram data comes from the sendPoll method of its Bot API[7], where is_anonymous defaults to True. Signal[8] added polls on 19 November 2025 and warns that responses are not anonymous. If you would rather keep your group’s data on your own server, Nextcloud Talk[9] has anonymous polls and exports results as JSON. The starting point is the Nextcloud with Docker install guide.
What is coming: adding options and creating groups from a poll
WABetaInfo has spotted two more features that are not in the stable release. On 18 August 2026 it found in Android beta 2.26.33.1 a toggle that lets members add options to a poll[10], still in development.
On 29 September 2026 it reported that beta 2.26.39.5 lets you create a group from an option[11] with at least two votes, rolling out to some beta testers. Until WhatsApp announces them, they are test features.
Frequently asked questions
Do the three lines next to a chat mean someone blocked me?
No. No source, official or press, links the icon to blocks, intrusions or privacy changes. The reading going around ties it to a poll, and WhatsApp has not confirmed it.
Does the poll creator see who voted when names are hidden?
No. The official help says that with this setting everyone, including the creator, sees vote counts but not names. Without the setting, any member sees who voted for what under View votes.
Can I change the options of a poll I already sent?
No. You can only edit the question for 15 minutes. To change options or settings, delete the poll and create a new one.
Conclusion
The three lines next to a chat are, for now, a press explanation without official backing, and the reliable way to find polls is the Polls filter in the search bar. What is documented deserves more attention than the icon: hiding voters hides names from the creator too, settings cannot change after sending, and Windows and Web still lack them. If the icon shows up on your phone, send a test poll to a group with someone you trust and compare the chat list before and after.
